In his purist approach to architecture and design, Eero Saarinen sought the essential idea and reduced it to the most effective structural solution. One of the most exemplary examples of which is the one-legged design of his Pedestal Collection. These effortlessly majestic pieces came from his desire to eliminate the confusion caused by “the slum of legs” underneath typical chairs and tables. The Tulip Chair, and accompanying Pedestal Table, have since become symbols of mid-century modern design and mainstays of the Knoll design legacy.
